Why does my breaker keep tripping?

A tripping breaker is a safety device doing its job. The question is why it's being asked to. There are three usual suspects.
1. An overloaded circuit
Too many things running on one circuit at once. Try moving a high-draw appliance, like a space heater, to a different circuit.
2. A short circuit
A hot wire touching a neutral or another hot wire. Often it trips instantly, and you may see scorch marks or smell burning. Leave the breaker off and call an electrician.
3. A ground fault
Current escaping to ground, often in kitchens, bathrooms and outdoors where moisture is involved. GFCI outlets and breakers trip to protect you from shock.
What you can safely check
- •Unplug everything on the circuit, reset the breaker, then plug items back in one at a time
- •Look for any appliance that trips the breaker on its own; it may be faulty
- •Never replace a breaker with a bigger one to stop the trips; that removes the protection
When to call a pro
If the breaker trips immediately after a reset, trips with nothing plugged in, or you notice heat, buzzing or burning smells, it's time to call an electrician.
